Inter County "A" Team Match
Dumbartonshire vs Stirlingshire at Cardross, 18th September 2011
Dumbartonshire got of to a victorious start in their first match against Stirlingshire.
In a closely fought and sporting contest, Dunbartonshire’s young team got them off to a flying start with the local Club Champion Liam Halliday leading the way and putting the first point on the board. We then lost the next 3 games, but with the strength placed in the middle, we won the next 4 games with 2 of our juniors achieving this, leaving us with only needing half a point to achieve our first win. However Stirlingshire won the next point, leaving the last match to finalise the result, fortunately Mick Eyton the DGU stroke play champion managed this with a birdie at the 16th putting him dormie 2 and with a 2/1 victory give Dunbartonshire their win.

DGU Seniors, May 3rd 2011 at Bearsden Golf Club
This year, Dumbartonshire Golf Union is reinstating one of its more established tournaments, the DGU Seniors Championship, to its former status as a stand alone championship.
Circumstances have dictated that in recent years it has been cancelled and then 'piggy backed' onto the Autumn meeting. However the committee are now confident that this once popular tournament can once again be played on its own merit and regain its standing as one of the more sought after competitions in the County roster.
Many famous names from DGU folklore have their names on this prestigious trophy, including CW Green, Cardross and RS White of Clydebank and District and it was inconceivable that this trophy would gather dust in a cabinet. What we ask is that all DGU golfers of 55 years and over support our Flagship Senior Competition and come to Bearsden Golf Club on May 3rd for a 'tilt at nostalgia' and the chance to catch up with golfers from other clubs in the County.
A memorable day surely becons...

Presidents Report
Once again this year has been busy, rewarding, fulfilling but tinged with a great deal of sadness. We lost two great stalwarts of Dumbartonshire Golf Union.
Archie Carrick was for 30 years a volunteer par excellence. A tireless worker for DGU in any capacity asked of him. His dry sense of humour and no nonsense approach was respected by all who came in contact with him. We would extend our condolences to David, his son, and all the Family.
Alan Jones, Mr Dumbartonshire. What can you say about this man? He was not only respected in DGU circles but had a presence throughout the Scottish golf scene based on his common sense, knowledge of the game and above all his driving support for Dumbartonshire Golf Union. We on the executive miss his camaraderie, his sense of humour and above all his wisdom on all golf matters. His legacy is there for all to see, DGU is a better organisation because of him. We miss you Alan...
Coaching:
The College continues to go from strength to strength and witnessed our second graduation and presentation of certificates to our 2008 alumni.. We have now inducted our fourth intake of young aspiring golfers, and we look forward to our third graduation in January 2011. Our model while mirroring that of the SGU, is the envy of many other counties and with Robert Collinson, Billy Hannah and Bob Provan at the helm we have a great team of coaches and mentors.
Website:
Our website continues to provide a wonderful asset to the County and you the members. Please continue to use it as you have this year.
Championship:
Ronnie Millers committee continue to do a wonderful job for DGU, and although the weather once again thwarted our finals day for the second year in a row the feedback from competitors and host clubs alike have been very positive. Congratulations to all our winners. The Seniors Championship was resurrected with help of Jim Paton and Gordon Thomson and played in conjunction with the Autumn Meeting at Douglas Park. Next year we hope to have it again as a standalone championship and give it the prestige it deserves.
Boys / Youths and Men’s teams:
All continue to flourish and once again acquitted themselves admirably against our near and not so near neighbours under the leadership of Graeme Smith and Hugh Semple. Our 6 man team performed valiantly at the new SGU Area team finals and came a very creditable 5th. I would like to thank Kevin Smyth, and Niall Lamond for managing the Men’s Team throughout the season and appreciate that it is very difficult to play and manage at the same time. Kevin is leaving the executive this year and hopefully will continue to play for the team for many years.
Secretary/Treasurer/Vice President:
Alan Harris has stepped into breach as interim secretary since Alan Jones’s departure and in my opinion has done a magnificent job for the County. Likewise Billy Hannah has used his expertise with the books to keep us on a level footing as our Treasurer. He has been ably assisted by our resident accountant and Past President Bob Provan whom I wish to thank for his loyalty and help over the recent past and for his trust in me when he nominated me as President of DGU.
Amalgamation:
Could I remind you gentlemen that we are at an important point in the History of the Scottish Golf Union. We are at the consultation phase of whether we should amalgamate with the SLGA and change the GOVERNANCE and the accountability of Scottish Golf. You as member clubs and individuals have been given the proposals of the Amalgamation Working Party. I urge you to ponder every aspect of what the Amalgamation will do for you, your club, and your county and most importantly of all, for Scottish Golf. Meetings are taking place with the Areas in the lead up to Christmas. Seminars for clubs will be held from February onwards. Please attend and ask pertinent questions. Amalgamation is not the main issue as far as I am concerned, the main issue is the future of Scottish Golf and its administration for years to come.
Gentlemen I have been very lucky to have had a great committee with me this year and last and it is with a great deal of sadness I pass on this Presidency but I look forward to working with Neil next year and representing you as Vice President of the Scottish Golf Union.

As a result of the heavy overnight rain which continued into the morning, most of the greens had standing water and despite the valiant efforts of the Greens staff to clear them, it was disappointing, but necessary, to take the decision to postpone the Finals Day.
Due to a number of factors, the Finals will be held over till the Spring and we will advise everyone of the new date when this is possible.

A Team Report
The ‘A’ Team continued their West League campaign with a match against Stirlingshire on Sunday at Glenbervie.
At the turn the game appeared in the balance with all but a few of the games being very close. On this occasion it was Dumbartonshire who got the early points on the board taking full points in 5 of the first 6 games completed, leaving them only needing a further half match to secure an overall victory. A spirited fightback from the home team saw them close the game to 5-3 with only 2 games left out of the course. The 2 visitors held fast to earn honourable halves and secure a 6-4 victory for the away team.
The ‘A’ team meet Glasgow next Saturday at Windyhill where they will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign.
Dumbartonshire was represented by :
P Betty, A Campbell, B Campbell, C Checkley, J Devaney, J Fowler, P Haggerty, N Lamond, R McKenzie and K Smyth.

'A' Team fixture v's Lanarkshire at Helensburgh, 19th Sep' 2010
The 2010 'A' team West League campaign got under way at Helensburgh yesterday with a home fixture against Lanarkshire. The overhead conditions were poor with both rain and wind being encountered. Despite the obvious heavy rain that had fallen overnight, the course was in good condition and had stood up well to the weather. Indeed the quality of the putting surface received positive comments from both sides.
Lanarkshire got off to an ideal start wining both of the first 2 games before the home team levelled the match at 2.5 to 2.5 after 5 games completed. The match then swung towards Dumbartonshire as they took a 4.5 to 3.5 lead with only 2 games left on the golf course. In game 9, a home team birdie at the 17th squared the game, leaving both remaining matches all square playing the final hole with the home team requiring just a point to emerge victorious. All 4 players held their nerve well, each making par at the final hole. This status quo outcome left Dumbartonshire with a victory of 5.5 to 4.5 to open the West League campaign.
The 'A' team next travel to Glenbervie on Sunday for a game against Stirlingshire.
Dumartonshire Team :
Paul Borland, Andrew Campbell, Craig Checkley, Ryan Coll, John Fowler, Niall Lamond, Fraser McKenna, Ryan McKenzie, Grant Minnes and Kevin Smyth.

I think in light of the recent weather it is worth a special note of thanks to the greens staff for the presentation and condition of the golf course which gained positive comment from both teams.

Matchplay Championship 2010
At Clydebank and District Golf Club on 9th, 10th, 12th and 13th August

On Monday evening, the 15 Qualifiers, together with the Defending Champion for 2009, Richard Docherty, Bearsden G.C., teed-off in the first round of the Match Play Championship.
Throughout each evening, a high standard of golf was on show and culminated in Craig Checkley, Vale of Leven G.C. and Steven Stewart, Clydebank Overtoun G.C., contesting the Final on Friday 13th.
The match was refereed by County President, Maurice Shields and was watched by supporters from both Clubs, County Officials, one or two neutrals and a dog!. (No guesses who the dog brought along!)
Both players produced some excellent scoring and the game was evenly poised at the turn. However, Steven managed to get his nose in front in the early stages of the back nine and , despite stiff opposition from Craig, he emerged the winner by 3&2.
Afterwards, in the Clubhouse, President Shields thanked the Captain and members of Clydebank & District for hosting both Championships and everyone who had helped to make the Tournament another success, before proceeding to present Steven with the Match Play Trophy.

The boys were playing for 30 places in Round 2 on Friday 2 July.and it is a credit to them that, despite some high scoring and a number of "no returns",they battled the weather to complete their rounds .At the end of the day, Gary Meechan, Dullatur G.C. was the overnight leader with a gross score of 71. C.S.S.for the day was 72.
In much improved conditions on Day 2, but with a stiff wind blowing for much of the time, Cameron Farrell, Cardross G.C., the Champion from 2009, came storming home with a fantastic score of 66, to take the Championship with a two round score of 142, five shots ahead of overnight leader Gary Meechan, with Angus Carrick from Douglas Park, taking third place on 148. Alan W. Jones
It is with deep regret that I have to announce the untimely death of Alan Jones, the Secretary / Treasurer of Dumbartonshire Golf Union. Alan had been unwell for a short time and passed away peacefully on Tuesday 8th June 2010.
He was a staunch supporter of DGU and fiercely protective of its position in the wider golf community. He was extremely proud of Dumbartonshire players and their achievements, whether it was winning national titles, or when they represented their country. He was particularly proud of their achievement in reaching The Area Team Championship Finals on a number of occasions.
The catchphrase, 'Premier County' is a tribute to Alan's tenacity in defending DGU in its position within Scottish Golf. Alan had been a 'Father figure' in Dumbartonshire Golf Union circles since 1990 and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

DGU President is new SGU Vice President
President of Dumbartonshire Golf Union, Maurice Shields has been installed as the new 2nd Vice President of the SGU. Following in the footsteps of John Clark and Douglas Dalgliesh, Maurice was nominated and stood unopposed at the recent SGU executive meeting. His nomination was ratified at the SGU AGM in January. We wish him well in this office over the next few years.
“I am absolutely delighted at this honour for myself, my club, Windyhill, and my county Dumbartonshire. Not everyone has the chance to put something back into the game of golf at such a high level and I will grasp the opportunity with both hands. The responsibility will be great but I will approach it with the knowledge that I have the backing and good wishes of all at Windyhill and Dumbartonshire Golf Union.”

Presidents Report 2009
This year like many others reported to you by past Presidents has been busy, exciting, rewarding and above all fulfilling.
Coaching:
The College has gone from strength to strength and witnessed this year the first graduation and presentation of certificates to our 2007 alumni.. In October we inducted our 3rd intake of young aspiring golfers, and we look forward to our second graduation in January 2010. Our model while mirroring that of the SGU, is the envy of many other counties and with Robert Collinson, Billy Hannah and Bob Provan at the helm we have a great team of coaches and mentors.
Website:
Our website was relaunched this year and has proved to be a wonderful asset to the County and you the members. Please continue to use it as you have this year. A copy of the the ‘STATS’ is available and I’m assured that the visits is between 3 and 4 times greater than the previous website.
Championship:
Ronnie Millers committee have done an excellent job this year in sometimes trying circumstances. On a negative note, we have somewhere along the line lost the interest of our senior members and despite their vast numbers they no longer have a competition to call their own.
Boys / Youths and Men’s teams:
All continue to flourish and acquitted themselves admirably against our near and not so near neighbours under the leadership of Graeme Smith and Hugh Semple. I would like to single out the County 6 man team which lost valiantly in the SGU area team championship final at Crail, our first final for 19 years. In particular I would thank our retiring team manager Jimmy Cuthbertson for his splendid leadership and his two willing deputies and fellow selectors Kevin Smyth and Colin Peddie for their invaluable contribution to the team effort.
Secretary/Treasurer/Vice President:
On a very personal note I would like to thank Alan Jones for his solid bookkeeping and personal guidance throughout the year and Neil Morrison for his unswerving loyalty to me and the executive.
Gentlemen I have been very lucky to have a great committee with me this year and look forward to my second year in office with relish knowing that Dumbartonshire is the Premier County in Scotland.

Scottish Seniors Championship

A County Seniors team took part in the above event at Lossiemouth and whilst finishing just outside the medals in 4th place, were certainly voted the best turned out.
The team finished only three shots behind winners North East and in addition Ian Jeen (Milngavie) finished with the equal best indivual round.

Finals Day 2009
As a result of the Finals Day being cancelled on Sunday, the Executive considered a number of options to complete these games before the end of this month.
However, due to the upcoming "Mid-term" School holidays and possible further inclement weather, it has been decided that, in all fairness and with the best interests of those due to play being of paramount importance, Finals Day 2009 will be held over till early Spring next year.
When a further decision has been reached as to where and when the Finals can be played, everyone concerned will be notified accordingly.

Dumbartonshire Fail at Final Hurdle

After a very successful Area Team Championship, Dumbartonshire just failed at the final hurdle. Having beaten old rivals Lanarkshire in the semi finals at Crail Golfing Society's Craighead Course there were high hopes of a first victory since 1980 for the youthful Dumbartonshire side.
These however were dashed by a formidable and experienced Renfrewshire team who were anxious to go one better than their defeat in last year's final at the hands of Ayrshire. Renfrewshire adapted to the conditions better than Dumbartonshire and ran out worthy winners of the Trophy.
Back row l to r: Alan Jones (Secy/Tres DGU), Andy Campbell (Dumbarton GC), Paul Betty (Hayston GC), Jim Cuthbertson (Team Manager),
Grant Minnes (Hayston GC), Craig Checkley (Vale of Leven GC), Bob Provan (Past President DGU).
Front row l to r: Kevin Smyth (Windyhill GC), Gordon Yates (Hilton Park GC), Collin Peddie (Kirkintilloch GC), Maurice Shields (President DGU),
Niall Lamont (Balmore GC)

Traffic Alert - Sunday 20th September 2009
Competitors and Officials, who might be considering using the M8 to travel from the Glasgow, Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch areas, to the Inter Area Team Match at Cardross GC or the Autumn Scramble at Helensburgh GC, should note that major roadworks on the Erskine Bridge and the Westbound A82 towards Dumbarton, could result in long delays as far West as Dunglas Roundabout at Bowling, where traffic flow will be controlled by temporary lights at peak periods.
This warning should also be noted by anyone approaching the Dalnottar Interchange from Clydebank, Bearsden etc., who may be affected by the extra traffic coming from the Bridge. To avoid late arrival at the Courses mentioned, you may wish to consider leaving earlier than originally planned.
Thank you in anticipation of your cooperation.

The final match takes place against Glasgow on 20th September at Cardross where a win or draw will see the County through to the national finals for the first time in 11 years.
Represnting the County were Colin Peddie (Kirkintilloch), Fraser McKenna (Balmore), Richard Graham (Hayston),

SGU Subscriptions - The Future

We publish below a letter from Douglas Connon, Chairman of Scottish Golf Union, sent to all Clubs in Scotland regarding the above. The Executive of DGU commend the forward thinking of the Union in these difficult financial times and welcome the decision not to charge members with no playing rights from 2011.
This decision which will also be implemented by DGU could have an effect on the County's finances and once we have done our sums will communicate further with you. Finally, it is our belief given the figures shown in the letter for other countries, the SGU are doing a great job in maintaining its subscription levels.

The West of Scotland Boys Championship Results

Dumbartonshire Golf Union would like to express their sincere thanks to everyone connected with Balmore Golf Club for allowing us the courtesy of their Course and Clubhouse, to hold the West of Scotland Boys Stroke Play and Match Play Championships.
Played on a very well prepared and presented Course and under great weather conditions, all the Competitors must be given a special "thank you" for their excellent sportsmanship and etiquette throughout the Competitions.
All six Counties were represented when 69 Boys teed -off on Tuesday, in the 36 -hole Stroke Play Championship. After a keenly contested competition, the worthy winner was Colin Robinson of Largs, with a tremendous two-round score of 136. Well done Colin!. Unfortunately, Colin was unable to return on Wednesday to take part in the Match Play event.
Sixteen Boys subsequently qualified for the Match Play Championship, which, after a further two excellent days, resulted in Euan Walker, Kilmarnock Barassie and Patrick McCarron, Windyhill G.C., contesting the Final, with Euan taking the honours.
At a short presentation after the Final, DGU President, Maurice Shields was on hand to present Euan with his well earned prizes. Once again, thanks to everyone for making this three-day festival of golf a tremendous success.

County Seniors Championship

It was with much regret that the Executive took the decision to cancel the above events due to be played on 5th May 2009 at Douglas Park Golf Club as a total of only 30 entries had been received.
This event has struggled somewhat for numbers over recent years despite changes of day, format and careful selection of courses. The introduction of a Team Championship in 2008 brought a welcome increase in the field to over 100 which makes this year's entry all the more disappointing.
In an effort to assist the Executive in reaching a decision on the future of these events, we would like to hear from our senior members and any comments or suggestions would be most welcome.
